The Estonian Cultural History Archives (ECHA), which are part of the Estonian Literary Museum, was founded in 1929 with the aim of collecting, cataloguing and making available various material about Estonia’s cultural history. In 1940-1994, the official name of the archive was the Department of Manuscripts at the Literary Museum. In 1995, the name Estonian Cultural History Archives was restored. The ECHA is a centralised institution storing archival material about cultural history. It includes personal papers and institutional archives, as well as collections of manuscripts, photographs, art, and audio and film tapes. The ECHA collects material itself, but it also accepts donations from individuals and organisations. Besides collecting, the ECHA is active in research and museum work.
